Presented by Luis Olmedo Velez and Stephanie Lucero
Facilitated by Sara Omar

Exploring the questions and concerns around the role of neutral facilitators working in projects involving Environmental Justice Communities. Luis Olmedo Velez, Executive Director at Comite Civico del Valle, will give an in-depth case study of the community work he has done in marginalized communities. Luis will be joined by Stephanie Lucero, Senior Program Manager at Udall Foundation’s U.S. Institute for Environmental Conflict Resolution and experienced environmental conflict resolution practitioner, to have an honest conversation on the complexities of environmental conflict resolution and the role of the facilitator working with community advocates. Speakers will explore the collaborative tools communities may utilize to achieve their goals by self-organizing, without the assistance of a third-party neutral, as well as how facilitators can work effectively to facilitate discussions within environmental justice (EJ) communities. Speakers will discuss potential expectations and concerns communities may might have of the facilitator, and the qualities of effective facilitation when working with EJ Communities. Participants will leave with lessons learned in terms of the complexities associated with working with EJ Communities, as well as qualities or skills that lead to greater effectiveness working with EJ Communities. This webinar is designed for ACR practitioners and EJ Community members alike.
